Cabbage makes one of the tastiest sides. This buttery cabbage with onion and delicious sausage is flavored with a good dose of garlic. This is a simple, quick, no-fuss recipe for busy weeknight suppers.
If you are a person who is able to tolerate cruciferous vegetables well, then you're in luck!
You can use your favorite sausage such as turkey sausage, pork sausage, andouille sausage, kielbasa sausage or other smoked sausage, since most sausages contain few carbs. This recipe is made in a deep skillet and is thus a one dish recipe.
For this cabbage recipe if you prefer tender cabbage vs slightly crunchy cabbage, you can cook the cabbage a little longer. The flavor of this dish is enhanced by the onion, garlic and sausages. There are no spices other than the seasonings of salt and black pepper, but if you like a kick you can add some red pepper flakes, paprika or Cajun seasoning for medium heat.
You can shred the cabbage using a food processor grating assembly or you can simply do what I did and that is slice and chop the cabbage coarsely into bite-size pieces.
This cabbage dish will keep in the refrigerator a couple of days. You can garnish the dish with parsley afterward, if desired. The meal prep for this recipe is minimal, making it a quick and easy recipe.
Cooking cabbage in bacon grease or bacon fat gives it amazing flavor. Remember leftovers, if there are any, should be refrigerated.
I love cabbage stir fries. The only thing I haven't tried it with is seafood.
If you would like a little tang to this dish, you could add a splash of apple cider vinegar. If you would like more vegetables in this dish, diced green bell peppers go well.
INGREDIENTS:
2 tbsp butter (30 mL)
1 onion, chopped
1 tbsp minced garlic (15 mL)
1 medium green cabbage, shredded
2 Italian sausages, cooked and sliced
Salt and pepper, to taste
In
large frying pan in butter, stir fry onion and garlic 4 minutes. Add cabbage and stir fry about 10 minutes until golden. Add sausage rounds and stir fry a few more
minutes, adding salt and pepper, to taste.
